Tires are an expensive part of your car and having to replace them can easily cost upwards of one thousand dollars or more, depending on the brand you buy. However, it is possible to extend the life of your current tires so that they remain in good condition for years to come. This will not only save you money but also keep you safe on the road.
One of the best ways to keep your car’s tires running smoothly is by rotating them. When the tires are rotated they are moved from one position to another on the car to make sure they wear evenly.
Why Don’t All Tires Wear Evenly?
Automotive Tires have different stresses on them depending on where they are located on the car. For example, the front tires have to bear the weight of the engine, which makes the front quite a bit heavier than the back. Also, the front tires are the ones that turn, which can also cause them to wear more rapidly than the rear tires.
Further, even the two front tires wear differently from each other. Because right-handed turns are more common in the United States, the left tire travels further on each turn ( the same principle as during a running race, the runner on the outside track runs further than the inside). This means that the left tire wears faster than the right.
How Are Tires Rotated
Tires are moved from one position to another. Typically, this means that the front tires are moved to the back and the back to the front. But some tires will also be moved to a different side, depending on the type. So the back right tire will move up to the left front position. This ensures the most even wear possible on all four tires.
